A professional portrait painting is something a little more special than a photograph. It captures the heart and soul and breathes life into the subject.
As an artist I try and capture the spirit and essence of what makes a person unique, something that inspires the viewer to remember a moment they shared with the subject or make them want to know that person a little more.
I currently am painting portraits, murals, or commissions of any kind.
If you would like me to paint it, I will do it.
This is a basic pricing guide to give you an idea of cost and the process.

The Process for Portraits:
When painting portrait commissions I prefer to take my own photo
references. I will also work from life if the client is willing to sit for me.
I will always discuss with the client what they desire of the painting.
What clothing, pose, size, lighting and what environment will be featured
in the piece. I also ask about where the painting will be displayed,
as the environmental lighting can change the look and feel of the work.
After taking sufficient photo references, the client and I will
agree on a preliminary color composition (similar to a “rough draft”
usually painting on the iPad or scrap canvas board)
I will work on the final portrait in my studio.
**Keep in mind it is difficult to work from old family photographs or snapshots.
I have done it and am willing, but am very selective of which to work with.
Where arrangements cannot be made for me to take my own photo references
please contact me via email to inquire about other options.

Testimonials
"It has been my pleasure to teach, learn from and draw/paint with Nik for many years. He has the soul of an artist and the desire to succeed in his art. Whatever the medium, he expresses his desire to communicate visually with fluid skill. His is a lyrical combination of creativity and technical prowess. All his years of conceptualizing the figure give his observational figure work an animated dynamic which breathes with life rather than some stilted 'study' plopped on the page. Nik's work is reminiscent of the Golden Age Illustrators, who had 'flare' in their work."

"Drawing is the bones of all good artists and Nik has been drawing well since we were kids. Not only do the mechanics of art come easily to him, but the emotion of his art is also so well portrayed. I will definitely be keeping tabs on all his latest works."

"Nik English is accomplished in both the graphic and visual arts. I have known him for six years. One of his paintings that I admire specifically is a portrait of his wife, my niece, Lena. Nik's attention to detail and his eye for perspective and color lend to a finished piece that is both aesthetically and creatively pleasing. He captures the essence of his subjects with an acute sense of insight. Nik has a strong work ethic and is comfortable with, and respectful of people."

"You have some very impressive figure drawings! Not only can you convey the sense of human form with just a few strokes, but I was particularly struck with your understanding of anatomy and proportion...I'm not sure if portraiture is your favorite type of art, but you have a knack for it....you have a great sense of control with a pencil, and I could also sense that same control in your pastel head studies...you have a real talent for creating strong (human) forms through drawing. That is really quite a gift, since anatomy is one of the most difficult things for artists to master..."
